The English Colonies in North America were located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Appalachian Mountains. France had colonies to the north. Spain had colonies to the South. The 13 colonies can be separated into three parts, or regions, by geography and climate. These three regions are: New England, the Middle Colonies, and the Southern Colonies.
Land in New England was rocky so farming was difficult. The summers were warm, but winters were long and cold. The growing season was only 5 months long. Colonists in this region had to find other natural resources to make a living. The colonists cut down trees to make buildings and boats. The fished for food.
The soil in the Middle Colonies, however, was rich, deep, and good for farming. The growing season was longer than New England and there was a decent amount of rain. Colonists also hunted for food and fur.
The Southern Colonies had the best climate of all, which made it good for farming. However, this came at a price. The humid weather attracted mosquitos, which also carried diseases. The Southern Colonies depended heavily on farming and the economy was heavily dependent upon plantations.
